Among Insurgents-Walking through Burma

Shelby Tucker-

A book that have you wanting to just carry on reading, and wish it will not end.
Difficult to categorise - it is an adventure, real adventure in the sense that , walking in the author footstep, one doesn't quite know what to expect next, danger, incidents, accidents, helps from unexpected source just unfold. It shows how much we can plan and yet life will just unfold as it see fit. Around the adventure, the author has cleverly weave in and out, historicall background, the hilltribes, people historical background- just enough to keep us interested, but not overwheming in its technical details. It is an adventure, grounded in facts, but also show us the working and politics around us. In each country he travelled to reach his dream - CHina, Burma and India, he is a pawn and also a player and sometime a master in each intricate plot,. Some, he walks in unexpectedly into the plot, some he direct the plot.

While he narrates how he evade the system in place, the police, army in China, Burma and India, it gives us a look at the inner working of each of these organisation.
The terrains he journeyed through were described in details and one can almost imagine being there, the leech infested walk, the intracies, and almost important, it give us an understanding of the Kachin tribes's culture

Shelby Tucker is an interesting man himself. A lawyer by training, he also act as General counsel for the Government Union of Burma. He dreamt to walk through Burma while young, but did not get to do it till he was 53 years old. I salute him for his tenacity.

For those who have travelled to Burma, this is an eye opener to the complicated politics of Burma and its people. There are more than 10 major different "race" in Burma.
This is a must read for those who wants to have a better understanding of Burma.
Whichever, it is an interesting adventure travel, one of its kind
